Thematic Route: The Hiking Route
Name of the Touristic Attraction: “Stariște – Trescovăț” Trail
Location: in Mehedinți County. The access on the route is made from the national road DN 57, at 6 km from Sviniţa Commune, right from the tourist stop “Stariște” towards Berzeasca.
Description: The route starts from Starişte Valley, and along it, at short intervals of time (about half an hour), we meet belvedere points, places to admire: the Danube, Mala Cucuiova, The Small Trescovăţ and The Big Trescovăţ. The belvedere points are at higher altitudes, culminating with Mount Trescovăţ. It is the place where an impressive panorama of both Romanian and Serbian landscapes opens. With an altitude of 755 m, Mount Trescovăţ is one of the highest mountains of the Iron Gate Natural Park. The route passes through the forests of “cer” (Quercus cerris), “gârniţa” (Quercus frainetto), “fag” (Fagus sylvatica) and meadows with grass covered with orchids and carnations. Near the base of Trescovăţ, the route meets the waters of Cozarişte Spring (its name comes from the Serbian word “coza”, which means goat), well known by the locals. This route is represented by flora and fauna elements specific to Romania’s S-V part, which have developed in line with the climatic elements existing in this corner of the country (temperate continental climate with sub-Mediterranean influences). A special and unique floral element adorns Trescovăț Volcano Neck. It is known as the Banat Black Pine. But the point of attraction of this route is the Trescovăţ Volcanic Neck itself, which is a rocky formation on which species of trees and shrubs can be found that in time they have taken weird shapes because of the weather phenomena, as well as belvedere points from where we can see how the Danube managed to create a spectacular course among the mountains.
