Bahna Paleotological Reservation is the oldest one and most interesting fossils point in the country, of great scientific value, being rich in deposits of coral fauna, lamellibranch and especially gastropodos fossils.
The reservation occupies an area of 10 hectares in Bahna – Orșova lowland basin, between the localities Bahna and Ilovița and between streams Curchia and Lespezi. It is one of the best known and most interesting fossil points in our country with great scientific value.
The paleontological reservation is represented by three fossil points of limestone reefs and briozoare , with gastereopode that completes the picture of a lush reef file, just like the tropical regions.
Here, in this area have been reported over 400 fossil species of bedenian (16 milions years), which is why they were considered among the most important deposits in the country.
This paleontological basin has been studied since the nineteenth century. Protected objectives are:
- Fossil point of Ilovița – on the Racovaț valley, near the village with the same name, where the limestone and clay marl deposits, also the complex of loamy contains numerous fossils: clams, echinides and foraminifera.
- Fossil point of Curchia – on the Curchia valley, near Bahna being the most important because of the fossils; limestone reefs origins, with numerous reefs and briozoare and other remnants of creatures, gastropods, bivalves, echinide, brahiopodes, complete the picture of a lifetime reef lush, like tropical region.
- Fossil point of Lespezi – on the gullies Lespezi, Curchia’s affluent, with deposits similar to those in Curchia.
This fossil reservation is considered of great scientific interest, being among the most oustanding in Easter Europe.
