The Natural Reservation has an surface of 100 hectare, being a large picturesque region near Ponoarele Village, in the northern part of the county. The uniqueness of this area is that those natural attractions are considered to be unique monuments even in Europe, offering enchanting natural landscapes with a high tourist potential.
Here we find a number of karst formations with an unique value in the country. The most famous attraction in the entire reservation is the Ponoarele Karst Complex, which designates a hilly area where there are many geological formations, of which the most impressive is God`s Bridge, also known as the Bridge of Giants.
This is the only natural bridge in the country, which was formed by the collapse of a cave ceiling. In his close vecinity, in one of the sinkholes that surrounds the bridge, is found the Ponoarele Cave, another natural attraction representative of kartst topography in area, whose galleries covers a little over 600 meters in length. Also lapiezuri field or limestone wrinkles are part of karstic complex, which lies on the surrounding hills, unique as well throughout European continent.
Also in this reservation there are the Zaton Lakes, temporary karst lakes with large amount of water during spring, after snowmelt and rainfall. Besides these unique natural karst attractions, Ponoarele Natural Reservation has also forests and meadows across the plateau.
In this area endowed by nature with many attractions there is also the only lilac forest in our country spread over an area of 20 hectares, at about 4 km distance from Baia de Aramă and called the Botanical Reservation. This enchanting forest magnetically attracts tourists in early May, when fragrant lilac flowers, colored in white and in various shades of purple completely change the appearance of the area, giving it a charming look. In this period, ever since 1965, it is celebrated the Lilac Festival.
