“Svinița Fossiliferous Area” Paleontological Natural Reservation – Asociaţia Pro-Mehedinţi

It is situated along the Danube, upstream from Svinița Village, between Greben and Iardumovacia Beck and it is divided into three valleys: Saraorschi Valley, Tiganski Valley and Vodiniciki Valley.

It is a famous reservation in Europe, which impresses with fossiliferous fauna very well preserved: Lower Jurassic-Cretaceous, over 60 species of ammonites, belemnites, brachiopods, bivalves. Svinița area is the only region in the country where Medium Jurassic (Dogger) is fully developed (200-176 million years) and where could be determined precise areas of rich molluscs and brachiopods fauna.

Svinița area protected objectives:

  • Saraorski fossiliferous point is located about 4 km west from Svinița, protected by Resolution no.23/1980 of Mehedinți County Council and primarily aims to protect ferruginous limestone, compared with Klaus stratum of Northern Alps. Those limestones form two layers, about 0.5 m thick each, extremely rigid, where  a level of approx. 10-15 cm of limestone rich in macrofosile: ammonites, belemnites, brahiopode etc can be found.
  • Tiganski fossiliferous point is located in the west extreme part of Svinița Village, on a valley that has the same name. In rock crevices on which time and bad weather left their marks, a series of uncommon plants with wonderful color have found shelter, some of them could be found only in this region.
  • Vodiniciki fossiliferous point is located on Mills Valley (Vodiniciki), nearby the eastern point of Svinița Village. Sviniţa Area is an area of international scientific interest, being one of the richest fossiliferous region within Medium Jurassic and Aptian of Tethys Domain, convenient for magnetostratigraphic, biostratigraphic and paleontological studies.

Nowadays, due to the barrier lake construction, the fossiliferous area is accessible only by boat, which stops just below the outcrop, at the point called “Pescărie”, located upstream at 2,5 km from Svinița Village.
