Ponoarele Natural Bridge – Asociaţia Pro-Mehedinţi

Ponoarele Natural Bridge (Bridge of God) is one of the three natural bridges of the world and is located in Ponoarele, near Baia de Aramă.

It is the largest natural bridge in the country and the second one in Europe (30 m long, 13 m wide, 22 m high and 9 m depth, the only one that can be used by cars, being crossed by DJ 670 Baia de Aramă – Drobeta Turnu Severin).

As petrographic composition, it has a massive structure of stratified limestone of 1-2 meters, the downstream arch being in a much better state preservation than the upstream one.

It is said that the Devil lived in Ponoarele Cave. The locals asked God to chase him, and God hit with His palm the cave ceiling, which collapsed and blocked the cave’s entrance.

On both sides of God`s Bridge there are the karstic lakes Zatonul Mare and Zatonul Mic. Also close to the Bridge of God, can be admired the Bridge Cave, the Fields of Ditches and the Lilac Forest.
