Legend / Story / Impressions / Recommendations: Cerneți Monastery is dedicated to the “Holy Trinity” and is on the list of historical monuments in Mehedinţi County. In 1662, Grigore Ghica voivode laid the foundation stone of the Cerneți Monastery’s Church. The church is fortified, being made of thick walls and narrow drawing windows that allowed the defense from the inside. It is a massive construction, with two towers out of which the one on the narthex plays the role of a bell tower as well. Today, from the whole monastery, only traces of the cellars ruins and the wall of the enclosure can be seen. Cerneți Monastery was known as an episcopal settlement and later on as a monastic settlement of monks. In 1970 the monastery entered in the heritage of the Iron Gates Museum. Today this worship place is a nunnery, administered by the Episcopate of Severin and Strehaia. The outside architecture consists of simple arcs in semicircle that sits on a horizontal girdle. The painting is no longer the original, because in the nineteenth century the church suffers two restorations. In 1827 all the painting was restored, under the management of Stefan Jianu, and in 1866 also the iconostasis. The votive painting depicts the entire family of Ghica Voivode.
