Name of the Touristic Attraction: The Danube in Gârla Mare-Maglavit Area

Location: The natural area is located in the Danube Meadow, in Mehedinţi County, along the Gârla Mare, Gruia and Vrata communes, near the DN56C national road.

Description: The Danube in Gârla Mare-Maglavit Area is a surface that covers approximately 2,750 hectares. Its territory is covered by deciduous forests, “transitional” forests to shrubs, swamps, rivers and lakes, pastures, some of which are still covered with vineyards, orchards and arable land. In Gruia-Gârla Mare Area there are birds such as: Yellow Stork, Red Duck, the hern, White-cheeked Gull, Reeg Egret, Danubian Falcon, Codalb, and a lot of birds that live in areas with a lot of water called Picioroange, Trârc Pitic, Stârc de Noapte, Cormoran Pitic, Dumbrăveancă, Lopătar. Here we also meet the Lăstun de apă (a bird like the swallow) and other birds like Prigorii, Corcodelul Mare and Grelușelul de Zăvoi. Among mammals there are gophers and otters.

– The “Descent of the Holy Spirit” Church in the village of Gârla Mare, built in 1838 and declared a historical monument

– The Church of Gruia dedicated to the “Assumption of the Virgin Mary”, built in 1834, historical monument

– In the “Bridge over the Pond” section, 200 m east of the former pig breeding complex, there is an archaeological site inhabited since the Roman era.

– In the “Gârloaca” point, on the Danube, in the right of the 835-836 river mileage there is an archaeological site with Bronze Age and pre-feudal houses.

– In the “La Carieră” or “La duzi” section there is an archaeological site with pre-feudal dwelling

– In the point “La Grinduri” or “Fântâna lui Bucă” there is a feudal necropolis, signalled on the surface by three stone crosses

– Right next to the 840 river mileage there are the ruins of a Roman farm (villa rustica) from Gârla Mare, located in the southern part of the village, on the high shore, non-inundated of the Danube. This Roman farm was founded after the creation of the province of Dacia.

– In the island in front of the locality there are numerous ceramic fragments that prove its inhabitation by the bearers of the Verbicioara and Gârla Mare cultures from the Bronze Age, as well as in Hallstatt.
