Description: Devesel commune is situated on the left bank of the Danube, in the southwestern part of Mehedinţi County, on the county road connecting Drobeta-Turnu-Severin and the Iron Gates II. It is delimited in the north by the Danube, to the east by Stârmina hill, to the west by Burila-Mare commune, and to the south by Jiana and Gogoșu. In this area there are a lot of birds and wild animals, showing a real hunting interest for the knowers. This is where we find wild ducks and geese that in the winter go to the Danube Delta. Rarely can you see a stork or a crane, but the gray stork is present in large numbers, especially in puddles. In 2000, the forests were populated with pheasants that multiplied. The commune is also a real interest for the passionates of archeology and history. Numerous vestiges of the ancient world have been discovered here. Thus, here we find: The Citadel Spot of Tismana Village, where Professor D. Tudor suspected that there laid down the Batoţi Camp, the Batoţi Paleontological Site or the Devesel Archaeological Site, the “Ochiuri” Point, Devesel Village. In the center of Devesel, a monument was raised, in 1926, in honor of the heroes fallen in the wars of 1877, 1913, 1916-1919. The main occupation of the people in this area is the agriculture, predominantly in the vegetal and livestock sector. Thus, the main crops are cereals.
Legend / Story / Impressions / Recommendations: According to historical sources, people have inhabited this area since ancient times. They found here good places for fishing, hunting, grazing and even sowing in the forests. The discoveries made in the Ostrovul Corbului area shows that here have been traces of life since the time of the arrangement of the primitive communes. There have been discovered over time tools, pots, and molded anthropomorphic representations dating back to the years 2500-2800 B. C. (the developed Neolithic period). They are among the first material traces, proof of the existence of the human settlement on the territory of Devesel commune. The fortifications built at the end of the 3rd century on the left bank of the Danube, very close to the water, were discovered, which was why after being abandoned they were destroyed by the waters of the Danube. These fortifications were in the Batoţi -Tismana area.
