Medieval Fortress of Severin – Asociaţia Pro-Mehedinţi

Medieval Fortress of Severin, located in Drobeta Turnu Severin ( in Dragalina Park) was built until the end of the thirteenth century.

Severin Fortress was built by Hungarian Kingdom as a military strategic center of Vidin Bulgarian Empire. The inside medieval Latin Church was placed under the patronage of Saint Severin of Noricum.

In the period of its creation, counted six defense towers surrounded by two concentric stones waves and a deep ditch of water. Administrative instability led to several phase of construction. Further research has shown that the first stage of construction was made of soil. In the next phase of expansion and consolidation of the fortress have used other materials such as ceramics, animal bones, fish bones, stone, brick and wood.

About the fortress was known to have had two towers on the south outer and two inner north. After its investigation it was descovered that the fortress had two more rows of walls on the north, the location of the gate. Moreover, in the towers of the fortress, which were divided, were discovered different rooms serving the soldiers.

Because of the territorial past conflicts, the old feudal fortress is a place where archaeologists still do research findings. The latest findings were some silver coins, 500 years old, a tomb and a cannon barrel with a coat of arms.

Nowadays, the fortress has only a thick wall on the northeast tower defense walls and traces of others buildings inside the fortress.
