The Diana fortress is situated one kilometer downstream from the “Đerdap” power plant. This was the most significant fortress on the border of the Roman Empire.
It was also a significant economic and trading center set apart from other antic locations.
The construction of the fortress was finished in 101, during the rule of King Traian in the time of his first conquest of Dacia. At the same time the channel, “Sipski Kanal”, was made, thus overcoming the biggest obstacle for traveling down the Danube River.
Since Diana was made on a strategically significant location its main purpose was to safeguard the border and secure the downstream entrance in to the channel.
Diana was used as a fort until the VIth century.
Today, Diana Fortress is best preserved and most representative roman cestrum in the Đerdap area.
