Fields of Ditches from Ponoarele – Asociaţia Pro-Mehedinţi

Ponoarele field of lapiezuri (limestone carved ditches) is part of Ponoarele karst complex and is situated below 600 m altitude.

Lapiezurile are apart karst forms that water has carved into the limestone. They look as fluted, true wrinkles furrowed limestone surfaces. Grooves sometimes exceed 4-5 meters long and have a depth of up to 30 cm, vegetation is formed by: candles, thyme and nettle.

Fields of ditches from Ponoarele are characterized by variety and expansion, epressiveness is given by the depth and diversity of forms of ditches.
In the camp of Ponoare are known such hearths of ditches. On the entrance of the village, on the right side, there are the ditches of Brăzișori presenting massive rounded forms ”lime bulbs that looks like haystacks”.

The Ditches of Cornetul Mare have simple forms and are less spectacular. The best known and most interesting are the Ditches of Cave Hill formning two distinc fields: The Field of Cleopatra and The Field of Aphrodite.

They lie like two white, gray and cold flowers on a surface of several hundred square meters. The Field of Cleopatra is located directly above the cave exit and is the most compact and fascinating of all. At a distance of 200 m to the south is The Field of Aphrodite, with smaller and deeper channels. These fields are truly unique in Europe.
