The church has Patron the “Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary” that is celebrated each year, on 8th of December. It is situated in the West side of the city, in the German neighbourhood. (The address is Aurelian Street no. 24).
The initiative of building the church came in 1860 for the gratification of the spiritual needs of the roman-catholic community in the city, considerable as number and competence. Thus, in 1858, the catholic community in Dr. Tr. Severin had 600 people and this determined the nomination of a constant priest.
Also, in 1860, N. A. Niculescu, former prefect of Mehedinți, donated 2 places for the construction of the church. The Congregation Turnu Severin was founded in 1861, by naming the Franciscan priest Probus Szabo as constant missionary in the area. For a while, Doctor Carol Davila was the handler between the roman-catholic community and the administrative authorities.
The donation of N.A. Niculescu wasn’t recognized by the City Hall until 1864, at the intervention of the central authorities. In the same year began the preparation for building the church and, concomitant, the catholic community school. Due to the disagreement of the local catholic community and the Roman-Catholic Archdiocese of Bucharest, the beginning of the construction was delayed till 1885.
The Church was built in Neogothic style, having the following dimensions: 26 m in length, 13 m width, the steeple 28 m, with a body of 19 m length and 10,5 m width and the presbyter of 8,25 m length and 5.53 m wide.
The construction of the church ended in 1887, when it was also dedicated by Paul I. Palma, Archbishop of Bucharest, attended by Hipolit Agosto, Bishop of Nicopole.
In the new church, the services began in 1888 and the Patron of the church was settled on the 8th of December (when the Immaculate Conception is celebrated).
In 1903-1904 was finished the construction of the steeple that was equipped with three bells. The church was badly damaged during the bombing in World War II and repaired afterwards. The current condition of the church and the parsonage is very good due to the fact that between 1990-2000 multiple works were done to the church.
Nowadays, the Roman-Catholic Church represents the religious sanctuary for 187 families and about 450 believers of the Congregation in Drobeta Turnu Severin.
