The ortodox rite church has as Patron The Sleeping of the Virgin Mary, celebrated each year on 15th of August. The construction of the church was done between 1842-1846, at the initiative of major Ion Ciupagea and his wife, Dumitrana Ciupagea, during the reign of the prince Ghe. Bibescu. It is the first ortodox church built in Drobeta Turnu Severin shortly after the foundation of the city. Till 1876 was the only church of the city and till 1881 was the cathedral of the city.

The church was built in boat shape. Initially, the church had a different appearance than the one today (had 3 steeples: one bigger over the body of the church and two smaller, in lateral, at the transept and the iconostasis was from the wall, it did not have the transept that can be seen today and it was surrounded by a wall made of brick. The transept that can be seen today was built in 1906.

The initial painting of the church in Byzantine style belongs to the painter Alexie from Câmpulung. The entire painting was restaurated and reconsecrated over the time: in 1957 by the painter Joseph Keber from Târgu Jiu; in 1947 by I Glavan from Novaci and in 1992 by the painters Papici Eugen si Florica from Drobeta Turnu Severin.

In the experts’oppinion, the imperial icons (Jesus Christ and Virgin Mary) from the transept and the body are prior to the existing painting and in terms of art, are the most valuable objects from the church, by their age and art.
