The Water Tower is the iconic building of Drobeta Turnu Severin, built by the engineer Elie Radu, aimed to supply the city with water. The construction was done in accordance with the approved project by the Municipal Council, on 10th of June 1910. It was completed in 1913 and opened in 1914 when the whole system of the city water supply was put into operation. The water supply was done directly from the Danube.
The Water Tower is 27 m high and once was the tallest building in the city. Its exterior remains unfinished and its medieval style and the passage of time has accentuating its personality.
During the First World War, the building served as observation poit of the german army due to its 4 turrets.
Once the town has been developed, the castle’s storage capacity becames insufficient. It is the time when it is raised the issue of building the third tank. This was made in 1964 and is located in the attic of the castle, over the last concrete floor of the building.
In 1980, the Water Tower loses its usefulness, tanks are emptied and used as offices and workshops. In December 2010, the City Hall managed to obtain funds for the rehabilitation of the water tower.
Nowadays, the Water Tower is part of the historical monuments and after the rehabilitation, it was introduced in the touristic circuit of Drobeta Turnu Severin.
The multi-function building is designed as a succession of vertical spaces. There is a touristic information center, exhibition spaces and an art gallery, a „History of water supply in Drobeta Turnu Severin” Museum, a photo and sculpture exhibition, a literary cafe and a belvedere point.
