Thematic Route: The Hiking Route

Name of the Touristic Attraction: The Eco-touristic Trail “Alion”

Location: in Mehedinți County. The access on the route is made from the European Road E70, at the exit  from Orşova towards Drobeta Turnu Severin, at about 4.2 km distance from Orsova railway station. The touristic route departs from Tarziului Viaduct, one of the few viaducts that crosses areas flooded by the storage lake’s waters.

Description: The route starts at the eastern extremity of the viaduct, on a path that used to connect with the agricultural land of the local inhabitants of Orşova and Tufari. The routes goes along the Târziului Valley. The area is covered with oak forests. There is a little more difficult part, on a rocky and slightly steep peak, perfect for admiring the landscape. Here the route meets enclaves that offer wonderful viewpoints to the Danube, to the Iron Gates Hydropower Station and to Kladovo in Serbia. In the area between the Voinic Peak (289.5 m) and the Alion Hill base, there is the “Câmpului Lung” Peak , sprinkled with farmlands and pastures. The peak of Alion Hill is itself a belvedere point towards Iron Gates. From the top of the Alion Hill to the bottom of it, the view opens to Cerna Bay. It’s a short but impressive route.

– physical effort: minimum (does not require special physical condition)

– marked with white triangle with equilateral triangle

– Depending on the season it is recommended:

1. Equipping with boots and waterproof clothing
2. Endowment with at least one bottle of 1 liter of water per person and a support stick

– for this route, the tourists have to be accompanied by the rangers of the Iron Gates Natural Park as well as for all the routes, because here can be found natural elements of invaluable value for the Romanian as well as for the European geology, flora and fauna.
