Name of the Touristic Attraction<\/strong>: The Lilac Forest From Ponoarele<\/p>\n

Location<\/strong>: in Ponoarele Commune, Mehedin\u0163i County. It is located 3 km south of Ponoarele, between the B\u0103lu\u0163ei and R\u0103icule\u015ftilor hills, 4 km away from Baia de Arama, on the road connecting Drobeta Turnu Severin to T\u00e2rgu Jiu.<\/p>\n

Description<\/strong>: It is a botanical reservation belonging to the area of the platform carst of the Mehedin\u0163i Plateau. It was formed in an intramontane depression, where many calcareous dives appeared. The lilac forest from Ponoarele is a botanical reservation considered by many to be a natural wonder. It is the largest lilac forest in the country. The Reservation stretches over an area of 20 hectares and is at an altitude of 500m. It was preserved due to the mild climate, with submediterranean influences and it was subsequently declared a protected area. Declared a monument of nature since 1965, it is part of the “Mehedin\u021bi Plateau Geoparc” protected area. In the forest, besides the lilac (Syringa vulgaris) and mountain ash (Fraxinus ornus), which are the main species, there are also the oak (Quercus petraea), Quercus farnetto (Garni\u021ba \u00een Romanian), etc. Cornus mas (Cornul \u00een romanian), Viburnum lantana (darmox in Romanian), Acer campestre (a kind of a maple tree), hazelnut tree (Corylus avellana), hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) and the mountain ash (Sorbus torminalis) are also present. The rare floral species found here are the black tulip and the Turkish cherry, and among the fauna species we mention the horned viper and the turtle.<\/p>\n

Legend \/ Story \/ Impressions \/ Recommendations<\/strong>: When the lilac blossoms here, there is a green carpet with shades from white to purple, which gives off a special scent. Every year, since 1965, the “Lilac Feast” is organized in these places. The locals say that the feast has much deeper roots, and it has been kept since ancient times, when everyone gathered here to enjoy the shade of the lilac forest.<\/p>\n
