Name of the Touristic Attraction: <\/strong>Vodi\u021ba Monastery<\/p>\n

Location: <\/strong>in Mehedin\u021bi County, at 17 km west from \u00a0Drobeta Turnu Severin and approximately 8 km east from Or\u0219ova, on DN6.<\/p>\n

Description: <\/strong>It is the oldest voivodal establishment documentary attested and the first monastic establishment in our country administered autonomously, according to the specific rules of the Orthodox Church.<\/p>\n

Legend \/ Story \/ Impressions<\/strong> \/ Recommendations<\/strong>: It was built in the 14th century, between 1370 and 1372, on the territory of V\u00e2rciorova Commune, near the border between the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Wallachia (\u021aara Rom\u00e2neasc\u0103), by St. Nicodemus of Tismana, on Prince Vladislav I \u2019s expenses. Vodi\u021ba Monastery was acknowledged as autonomous and thus became the most powerful spiritual, cultural and missionary center of the area. Turkish’s attacks on the Danube fortresses have determined the monastic center to be moved in a more secure area. However, the Vodi\u0163a monastery was completely devastated by the Turks at the end of the 17th century. Around 1689 Vodi\u021ba Monastery was rebuilt by Cornea Br\u0103iloiu, who held the position of “great commander” (in Romanian- mare ag\u0103). After the Austro-Turkish war, ended with the Peace from Passarowitz, around 1718, the monastery suffered another decay. Thus, in 1891, the building is in an advanced state of degradation, the cells being thrown down to the ground. The works for the reconstruction of Vodi\u021ba Monastery began after 1991. Thus, between 1991-1995 a large body of cells was built and in 1995 started the construction of a wooden church, in Maramure\u0219 style a little further from where the original ruins were. Today, on the way leading to the monastery, on the left side, it can still be seen some of the ruins left from the oldest Orthodox monastery in Wallachia.<\/p>\n
